Molly’s “V” Girls, Three Weeks

Veronica, Vanna, Vera and Violet ventured wobbling steps around the whelping box in the past few days – they’re off and running!  Or at least headed that way.

This is Veronica, black and white,

Vanna, tri-color,

Vera, black and white,

and Violet, tri-color.

The girls turn their heads eagerly to us when we approach.  They fit nicely into our hands, the size and shape of warm baked potatoes.  They mouth each others’ faces with pink gums, and I can’t help but muse about how soon they’ll be gripping ears and tails with sharp new teeth.

Our three litters of 2011 have come in quick succession, highlighting the fleeting nature of any stage.  Wasn’t it only yesterday that the “Z” girls were little fluffy lumps, all eyes and somber expressions?

Molly Clair is completely contented in her whelping nest upstairs for these early weeks.  She comes and goes as she pleases, confident in her privileged position.  The other dogs must remain downstairs, which they obediently do, and they’re content to peer up in the direction of the occasional mewing sounds.  We bring the little “V”s down from time to time, to cuddle during a TV show or to share briefly with friends, but for the most part Molly nurses and tends them without the curious older dogs offering advice or commentary.
